Knowing When It's Time to Say Goodbye

Our cats and dogs can’t tell us directly when they’re ready to pass on, but there are signs we can look for to help us better understand their plight. As always, we are here to help you in this difficult decision by assessing your pet’s health and providing palliative and hospice care as needed to help ease their discomfort. However, it is wholly up to you to determine when it’s time to say goodbye. You know them best of all and can more readily determine when they are no longer themselves and are ready to pass on.

Signs your pet may be ready to say goodbye:

  • No longer interested in things they used to love (treats, a favorite toy, going on walks, etc.)
  • No longer greet you at the door when you come home
  • Avoid social interactions with other pets and your family
  • Sleep more than usual
  • Little interest in food or water
  • Seem to be in pain more often than not, despite pain medications
  • Difficulty getting up from laying down
  • Reluctance to climb the stairs, walk, or run

Preparing for Cat
or Dog Euthanasia

Once you’ve decided the time is right to help your pet pass on with dignity, it’s important to make the necessary preparations. Be sure to arrange after-care services for your pet’s remains before your appointment, in order to avoid making hard decisions on an already difficult day. At Old Ridge Veterinary Hospital, we work closely with Paw Prints Forever Crematory here in Chadds Ford, who offer private pet cremation services as well as memorial services. They also offer urns and other keepsakes for you to remember your pet by.

The Euthanasia
Process

Whether we perform humane euthanasia in the comfort of your home or in our hospital, we ensure the process is peaceful and stress-free for all those involved. You and your family will be given as much time as you need to say your final goodbyes. When you’re ready, we’ll begin by administering a sedative to your pet that puts them into a deep sleep. Then, we’ll administer the euthanasia, which works very quickly and causes your pet no pain at all.
